After the Heist - A Short Story

All this started with Jones wanting someone to keep him company. Something as simple as that, which is what led him to his current predicament. Finding an old teddy bear of his from when he was a kid, he thought that he could use his skills to bring it to life.

Skills. Magic is a better word for that.

When the teddy bear came to life, Jones thought it would be fitting to call him Teddy.

Teddy was innocent at first. Hell, he always was.

Until he wasn’t.

Jones has taught Teddy everything he knows.

He taught Teddy how to bring inanimate things to life.

He also taught Teddy how to be an excellent thief - how to be quiet, how to sneak about, and how to lockpick. These are skills - not of the magic kind.

All seemed fine and dandy. Teddy learned fast. He was always helpful. He even saved Jones’ life several times.

All this leads us to Jones’ current predicament.

With Teddy having saved Jones’ life more than once, one may think that Teddy would come to the rescue. Well, it turns out that Teddy is the reason behind Jones being in the position that he is in.

It turns out that Teddy isn’t as innocent as he was in the beginning. Or was he never innocent? Was it all a facade? Jones wants to believe that Teddy was innocent, and something changed him. But what could have happened that could change him into what he is now?

Jones and Teddy were in the middle of a heist. Jason didn’t know what happened. One moment they were inside the building they were targeting, and the next he woke up here. In a basement? A dungeon? A basement that looks like a dungeon? Wherever he may be, he is behind bars, with it locked, and a bullet hole in his gut.

The bars look locked. Jones was too physically hurt to be able to go and check.

He can definitely tell that the bullet wound was done by someone who knows what they are doing. Someone that knows that its location would cause him to suffer a slow and painful death. Something that he taught Teddy.

Jones hears laughter. He looks up from looking at his wound to see Teddy walking up a set of stairs.

Teddy disappears at the top of the stairs. Jones hears a door open, close, and lock.

Jones has no idea why Teddy would do this. Whether Teddy was innocent before this or if it was a facade, Jones will never know. He would never have expected that he would be in this position, and that the person behind it is Teddy.

Not too long ago, Jones asked himself if Teddy was ready for the life that Jones had brought him into. Sitting down here behind these bars, Jones has no doubt that Teddy is fully capable of leading this life. After all, Teddy has shown his impeccable skill throughout the years. On top of that, Teddy brought Jones down here and left him to die. Teddy’s skills and apparent cold character will serve Teddy well.

While Jones may never know what happened during the heist, he knows that Teddy undoubtedly surpassed Jones’ expectations.

What will happen to him down in this dungeon’s basement? Will he be brought back to life after he dies? Jones will have to wait to find out.
